RR Breed Health Survey 2022
Compiled by The Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Council
Dear Rhodesian Ridgeback Enthusiasts,
On behalf of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Council Health Sub Committee, I am very pleased to be able to give an outline of the findings of our Health Survey carried out in 2022. Further details will in due course be available on all of the U.K. Breed Club Websites as listed below.

Approximately 430 individual Owners took part in the survey with information provided on 734 individual dogs. These responses came from a mixture of Breeders and Pet Owners and it is important to note that some dogs may have had more than one condition reported on the survey.
We were keen to encourage everyone to take part and it is pleasing to see that 45% of those that did reported no health issues during their Ridgebacks lifetime.
The main categories that had reported health conditions were: Cancers & Tumours 11.3%, Dermatological (Skin) 8.17%, Aural (Ears) 7.36%, Muscles Bones & Joints 5.3%, Gastro-intestinal 5.18%, Cardiac (Heart) 2.86%, Neurological 2.2% and Ocular (Eyes) 2%.
Overall temperaments were very good. There was a noticeable amount of people reporting that their Ridgebacks were always Excitable/Active and Outgoing/Friendly. This is really great to hear especially as lockdown in recent years restricted everyone’s ability to ensure dogs get the important socialisation that they require.
I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank everyone who took part in the survey giving us invaluable information for future health plans. We do hope to carry out further surveys in the coming years and look forwards to your continued support and also welcome input from those that did not take part this year.
Kind Regards
David Simpson - Breed Health Coordinator
